Parents are not allowed to watch the tryout sessions.  Only players, evaluators, coaches, and board members are allowed in the gym or observation areas during tryouts.

If your player cannot attend tryout for medical or other reasons (ie: religious or family event), please contact Mutt Pierpont (, BYB Travel Director, prior to tryouts.  Without a 2019 tryout evaluation, we will review the prior year tryout evaluation and talk with the former coach.  New players without a 2019 tryout evaluation will need approval from the BYB Board to be placed on a team.

We always have long lines at check in, and we will start on time.

Players should wear comfortable shorts, a t-shirt and shoes they play basketball in.  Basketballs will be provided.  Prior BYB uniforms should not be worn for tryouts.

Each player will be given a tryout jersey with a number.  They should wear this jersey for both nights of tryouts and return it at the end of the second night.  This number is how they will be identified by the evaluators during tryouts.

Uniforms for the 2019-20 season are the same as those used last year.  If your player needs a new uniform, please plan extra time before tryouts to try on sample sizes.  Please remember the size of jersey and shorts that fit so you can order correctly if your son is selected and accepts a position on a BYB Traveling team.  This is the only opportunity to try on uniforms for this season.

Ordering information for uniforms will be available after teams are formed.

We are pleased that the Blaine High School (BHS) Varsity Basketball Coaching Staff is again directing tryouts this year.  We appreciate their partnership with us and experience in evaluating young players.  In addition, this year we will have independent evaluators from outside the Blaine community.  These evaluators also bring extensive basketball coaching and youth evaluation experience to our tryout process.  We believe multiple evaluators protect the integrity of our tryout process and allows each player to be seen in a variety of situations by several evaluators. Head Coaches from past teams will also participate in running stations and directing players throughout the evening.  Many of our BYB board members will be on-site providing assistance and performing administrative functions.

The purpose of tryouts is for each player to be given a fair opportunity to demonstrate their basketball ability.  Players will move through stations as directed by the BHS basketball coaches in a camp/clinic-like format.  Drills will focus on dribbling, ball handling, passing, shooting and other basketball skills/abilities.  They may also participate in grade level 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 games to demonstrate their skills in game-like situations.

Specific drills, evaluation criteria, and scoring methodology are set by a committee of representatives from the BHS varsity program and the BYB and will be pre-determined prior to the preseason tryouts to adhere to our policies below:

  • No evaluators will have a child in the grade they are evaluating
  • Evaluators are given 2-4 areas of focus for each station and submit evaluations based on observations and performance
  • Evaluation Criteria are detailed in the attachment below:
  • Each player will be observed and scored by several evaluators using a score sheet like this:
2019 Tryout ScoreSheet
  • All scores are tallied for each night of tryouts and a final average score is calculated per player.  We are not looking only for the best shooters and tallest players.  We use BHS and independent evaluators to aid in assembling the best teams that bring a variety of skill sets and work together well.
  • New players to the program may be required to include a copy of their report card, or school letter to allow for BYB validation of both grade level and jurisdiction eligibility.

  • BYB reserves the right to limit or expand the number of teams based on the number of players that tryout, the talent demonstrated, competitive opportunities and coach availability.

Teams will be posted on the Boys Traveling page of the BYB website after 4:00 PM Saturday, September 14, 2019.

If your son is not placed on a traveling team, he will automatically be placed into our In-House/Rec program which runs mid-December 2019 through March 2020.  The tryout fee ($25) is non-refundable, but any seasonal fees paid above and beyond the In-House season fee would be refunded.

If you have any questions about the Boys Traveling Tryout Process, please contact the BYB Boys Traveling Director listed below.
